“Tower of Traps”

Lion-O charges sword-first against a swarm of winged gargoyle creatures descending from above, while the ThunderKittens and a white-haired companion scramble into action beside him — all of it unfolding atop a pile of scattered gold coins and a fallen armored skeleton. This November 1987 Star Comics/Marvel issue, "Tower of Traps," promises exactly the kind of peril its title suggests, with cover pencils by José Delbo and inks by Dave Hunt bringing the threat to vivid, kinetic life. Fans of the animated series will find the team in fine form here, facing odds that look genuinely daunting.

Kronus, an elderly Wallo, is attacked by gargoyles that steal a ring, once belonging to his deceased wife, now promised for his daughter on her wedding day. Wilykit and Wilykat, aided by Lion-O, then enter the Black Tower of Robber Baron Karnor to recover the ring. They succeed but, escaping, are attacked by the gargoyles. To face this threat, Lion-O calls the other Thundercats for help, and the assembled heroes destroy the monsters and end the tyranny of Karnor at last. The heroes then head for the Wallo's village and present the ring to Kronus's daughter.
