Lucy won't marry David until he earns a salary that would allow them to escape the poverty in which they live. Her sister Ellen is married to rich businessman Charles and he agrees to hire David as his office manager. David takes the job to please Lucy, although Charles is a snob and treats David and Lucy poorly. David makes a down payment on a house, using money he "borrowed" from the office. Lucy has him return the money and quit his job; she agrees to marry him right away. They'll make their future together.
