Clare has been engaged to Peter for five years but has no intention of marry him. He's "social security," the "steady date a girl has to have." Clare falls in love with Pete's friend and partner Cliff, but before she can break up with Pete, he's badly injured in a car crash. Cliff says Clare can't dump Pete now. However, a few months later Pete returns with a new wife, Ellen, his former nurse. Clare and Cliff can now be married.
