“This World Renounced!”

In "This World Renounced!", Thor faces a dire trial when Odin banishes him to space—only to be called back when Loki injures Balder on Earth. With Odin’s blessing, Thor rushes to aid his brother, transforming into Dr. Blake to save him. But Loki’s deception runs deep, and as Blake is overpowered, Odin sees through the trickery. When Loki is forced to take Thor’s place in exile, the consequences of his cowardice are laid bare. Written by Stan Lee and illustrated by Jack Kirby, with inks by Vince Colletta and lettering by Artie Simek, this pivotal issue features a cover by John Romita, who both pencils and inks the striking image of Thor’s fate hanging in the balance.

Odin is about to send Thor into exile in space. Loki tries to upset Thor further by injuring Balder on Earth. Odin allows Thor to go to Balder’s aid. Seeing Balder’s injuries, Thor becomes Dr. Blake. Blake is attacked by Loki and is overcome. Odin is wise to Loki’s scheme and intervenes. Cowardly Loki, holding aloft Blake’s cane, must face exile in place of Thor, as Odin’s decree was to exile him who wielded the enchanted hammer. This does not go down well with Loki. Dr. Blake performs surgery on Balder, saving his life.
