Uncanny X-Men Annual #16 is the essential pivot of the 1992 'Shattershot' crossover — the first X-office annual event self-contained entirely within the X-family of titles, made possible by the then-new X-Men vol. 2 giving the line four annual-publishing series for the first time. The issue delivers the debut of the Death Sponsors (Cancellator, Deadair, Lead-In, Sweepzweak, and Timeslot), Mojo's rival mercenary squad, and a pivotal early appearance of Mojo II, the shadowy clone-pretender to the Mojoverse throne whose identity would not be formally confirmed until X-Men #11 months later. Beyond its world-building, the issue deepens one of the era's most compelling character arcs: it forces the Gold Team — and the reader — to seriously weigh Bishop's brutal, ends-justify-the-means approach to combat only weeks after his introduction, while simultaneously resolving Arize's amnesiac journey and sending him off on a quest to understand what makes humanity worth saving.

History

Writer Fabian Nicieza scripted all four chapters of 'Shattershot' under editor Bob Harras and editor-in-chief Tom DeFalco, with this chapter penciled entirely by Jae Lee — then a rising talent who would soon handle fill-in work during 'X-Cutioner's Song.' The annual also carries two backup stories: a Warren Worthington/Archangel near-death vignette by Chris Cooper introducing the one-off character Amalgam, and a Storm/Bishop character study scripted by Skip Dietz with pencils by Herb Trimpe and inks by Tom Palmer. The issue was released on newsstands March 10, 1992, with a May 1992 cover date, and was later collected in the Marvel Epic Collection 'Bishop's Crossing' (2022).
