Written by Scott Lobdell and penciled by Salvador Larroca — with inks split between Scott Hanna and Tim Townsend and colors by Hi-Fi Design — the issue was edited by Mark Powers under editor-in-chief Joe Quesada, who had recently taken the reins of Marvel's editorial direction. The story was constructed as a partial homage to Giant-Size X-Men #1, with the opening page echoing that landmark issue's team-assembly format but substituting Jean Grey's impromptu recruits for the classic 'All-New, All-Different' lineup. Sunpyre's introduction created an almost immediate continuity problem, as Sunfire's established backstory clearly stated that his mother died giving birth to him — making a half-sister sharing the same mother difficult to reconcile; this tension was noted by fan-history sites and was effectively sidestepped when the character died in Uncanny X-Men #405. The issue was distributed with a CD-ROM for the then-active marvelonline.net service, a period-specific artifact of Marvel's early web presence.
