By mid-1988, Uncanny X-Men had shifted to a twice-monthly release schedule, which meant Claremont was plotting at a furious pace across simultaneous story threads — the Genosha arc, the approaching Inferno crossover, and Madelyne Pryor's corruption into the Goblin Queen. The accelerated schedule is likely why penciling duties on the arc alternated between Marc Silvestri (even-numbered issues) and Rick Leonardi (odd-numbered issues, including #237), allowing Silvestri to bank pages for the upcoming Inferno story. Ann Nocenti served as editor, with Tom DeFalco as Editor-in-Chief; the creative team for #237 was completed by inker Terry Austin, colorist Glynis Oliver, and letterer Tom Orzechowski. The issue was released on July 5, 1988 with a November 1988 cover date, during a period when the title's massive sales gave Claremont unusual creative latitude to pursue explicitly political material.
