About this Collection

This collection brings together the 2020 comic series The Stringbags, published by Naval Institute Press. The story follows the daring exploits of British Fleet Air Arm pilots flying Fairey Swordfish biplanes—nicknamed 'Stringbags'—during World War II, focusing on their critical missions against formidable naval targets.

"1: To Your Lads in Their Enterprise" delivers a taut, grounded wartime tale from Garth Ennis and PJ Holden, following Archie, Ollie, and Pops—a trio of pilots flying a biplane torpedo bomber, or "stringbag"—as they’re thrust into the high-stakes assault on Taranto. With their spare fuel and compass lost mid-mission, they’re forced to crash-land near a British vessel off the coast of Albania, setting the stage for a tense survival story. The vivid artwork by PJ Holden, with coloring by Kelly Fitzpatrick and lettering by Rob Steen, brings the gritty realism of the era to life, while the cover by Holden captures the moment with striking precision.
