“Secret as the Grave!”

From 1979, this May issue of Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man puts the web-slinger in an intense rooftop clash, with Spider-Man trading blows mid-air against a muscular, bandage-wrapped opponent amid a burst of explosive impact. The cover tagline "Crimson Dust of Death!" sets an ominous tone, and a small figure visible in the background hints that even more trouble is lurking nearby. Keith Pollard's pencils and Bob Layton's inks give the whole scene a kinetic, punchy energy that makes this Bill Mantlo–penned issue a satisfying snapshot of late-'70s Marvel at its most dynamic.
