The Shadow #16
Part three of DC's "Body & Soul" arc arrives in November 1988, and Kyle Baker's cover sets an unsettling tone: a hunched, goggle-wearing figure clutches dual weapons and a bandolier of ammunition against a dark background, while the repeated "HEHEHE" lettering crawls along the bottom in a deeply ominous laugh. Andy Helfer and Baker's mature-readers take on The Shadow continues to push the pulp hero into genuinely strange territory, and this villain's cold, mechanical stare suggests the Night of the Inoculator lives up to its creepy promise. A strong chapter in one of DC's more daring late-'80s runs.
