“Interrupted Melody”

The Sensational She-Hulk's fourth-wall-smashing humor is on full display in this 1991 Marvel gem, as the cover shows Jennifer Walters gleefully scooping up a bespectacled, hammer-wielding blond man while a brown-haired woman in a yellow jacket looks on — with speech bubbles making it abundantly clear that She-Hulk and her creative team are having a very spirited negotiation about who's really in charge here. It's a wonderfully self-aware gag that perfectly captures the series' playful, meta sensibility, with John Byrne handling both pencils and inks on a cover that winks at readers as warmly as it entertains them. If you've ever wanted a superhero comic that cheerfully argues with itself, issue #31 is a thoroughly entertaining place to be.
