“Gunman's Quest!”

Marvel's long-running Western series delivers a hard-charging entry with issue #143, featuring Gil Kane's dynamic cover of the Rawhide Kid lunging forward with pistols blazing amid a chaotic frontier street showdown, adversaries scattering on either side while a rearing horse looms in the background. The cover promises "six-gun fury as the Kid searches for his long-lost brother," giving this January 1978 installment a personal, driven edge beyond a typical range war. Inside, Larry Lieber handles writing, art, and inking duties solo — a real one-man-band effort — making this a notably unified creative package for fans of classic Western comics.

The Rawhide Kid retells his origin to Chita and she notices he has a star-shaped birthmark, noting she's met another man with that mark. The Kid searches for that man and learns he's Frank Clay, his older brother, the brothers being separated when their family's wagon train was raided. After saving Frank from a fight with Cragg, the Kid learns they have another brother, Joe, who ran from the wagon train attack. The Kid soon meets Joe when Joe tries to collect the bounty on the Kid so he can marry Kathy, but when he learns the Kid is his brother Joe lets him go free.
