The Occult Files of Dr. Spektor #23

Gold Key's supernatural investigator looks to be in serious trouble on this moody 1976 cover by Jesse Santos — Dr. Spektor, suit-clad and desperate, is surrounded by grotesque, clawing creatures in a hellish, rust-colored netherworld, with a ghostly female figure and more monstrosities pressing in from every direction. The tagline "Doomed in a Deadly Netherworld — Where Mortals Fear to Tread" sets the stakes perfectly, and Santos's painted-style artwork gives the whole scene a genuinely unsettling atmosphere. Fans of Gold Key's horror line will find this late-series entry a fine showcase for one of the publisher's most underappreciated occult heroes.
