“Beast! Chapter Three: The Monster in Us!”

Three figures race desperately through what appears to be a darkened, debris-strewn room, coiled in the grip of massive blue tentacles that curl menacingly around them — one character in the foreground clutches a glowing cross as though it may be their only hope. Gene Colan and Bob Smith's cover work captures a genuine sense of dread, with the skull-adorned logo and the tagline "To Save Mankind, They Became the Night Force" setting a wonderfully grim tone. This May 1983 issue, written by Marv Wolfman, is the third chapter of the "Beast!" arc — and the cover promises the kind of atmospheric supernatural horror that made this series a standout corner of DC's early '80s lineup.
