About this Collection

The New Avengers #1 (Nona Arte, 2011) marked the debut of this European publisher's Dutch-language Marvel comics line, bringing Brian Michael Bendis and Stuart Immonen's post-Siege 'Heroic Age' Avengers revival to Dutch-speaking readers for the first time in collected album format. The underlying story — subtitled 'Uitbraak' (Breakout) — is itself historically significant as the launch of New Avengers Vol. 2, which repositioned Luke Cage as the central Avenger of a deliberately diverse, street-level team operating out of a re-purchased Avengers Mansion, a sharp tonal contrast to the years of Dark Reign and Civil War turmoil that preceded it. The arc also set in motion the short-lived tenure of Doctor Voodoo as Sorcerer Supreme and established Victoria Hand — a former Norman Osborn lieutenant — as the team's morally ambiguous government liaison, introducing real ideological friction into the roster dynamic. As a foreign-edition reprint, this volume also represents the broader international reach of Bendis's Avengers era, with the material simultaneously receiving editions in German, Russian, and Italian markets around the same period.

History

Nona Arte Comics was a European publishing venture founded by Andrea Rivi, previously the Publishing Manager Italia for Panini and a founding figure of Edizioni BD, with an intended distribution footprint across the Netherlands, Germany, and Italy. The company announced in late 2010 that its Dutch-market flagship would be Marvel Comics titles, launching with Bendis and Finch's original New Avengers run and the then-current Bendis and Immonen 'Heroic Age' series. The source material for this album — New Avengers Vol. 2 #1 (cover-dated August 2010) — was itself the product of Marvel's deliberate post-Siege editorial reset, with Bendis retained as writer and Immonen, fresh off his work on Siege and Secret Invasion, brought in as series penciler alongside colorist Laura Martin. Editor Tom Brevoort oversaw the relaunch as part of the broader 'Heroic Age' initiative that Marvel announced in March 2010.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Published by Nona Arte Comics, a European publisher founded by Andrea Rivi (ex-Panini Italy, co-founder of Edizioni BD), targeting the Dutch-language market.
  • Titled 'Uitbraak' (Dutch for 'Breakout'), reprinting Marvel's New Avengers Vol. 2 #1 (August 2010) and subsequent issues in album format.
  • The source comic was written by Brian Michael Bendis with pencils by Stuart Immonen, inks by Wade von Grawbadger, and colors by Laura Martin.
  • Launched as part of Marvel's 'Heroic Age' publishing initiative, announced March 2010, following the conclusion of the 'Siege' crossover event.
  • Introduces the Vol. 2 team roster: Luke Cage (leader), Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, The Thing, Ms. Marvel, Mockingbird, Spider-Man, Wolverine, and Victoria Hand (Norman Osborn's former aide, assigned by Steve Rogers as liaison).
  • The story arc involves a dimensional threat tied to the Eye of Agamotto and the death of Doctor Voodoo (Jericho Drumm) as Sorcerer Supreme, with Doctor Strange subsequently rejoining the team after the opening arc.
  • Tony Stark symbolically sells the reconstructed Avengers Mansion to Luke Cage for one dollar, a story beat that established Cage's independent authority over the team.
  • The material was also collected in the New Avengers Omnibus (Marvel, 2012) and received concurrent foreign-language editions in German (Hachette/Panini), Russian (Hachette), and other markets.
