“Last Rites Part Two of Two”

Framed against an elaborate stained-glass window with a city skyline glowing beyond it, the Monolith surges forward in this August 2004 DC series — a massive, shadowy golem-like figure with two alarmed young women swept along behind him, their expressions caught somewhere between fear and urgency. The tagline "Sanctuary for a Demon!" hints at the dangerous territory explored in "Last Rites Part Two of Two," the concluding chapter of this arc. Phil Winslade's cover work gives the scene a striking Art Nouveau energy, with the ornate arching glass perfectly offsetting the raw, hulking presence at its center.
