About this Issue

The Herculoids #1 (2025) marks the first dedicated ongoing comic series ever built around Alex Toth's 1967 Hanna-Barbera creation, giving Zandor, Tara, Dorno, and their five creature companions their own sustained narrative home in comics for the first time in the property's nearly six-decade history. Dynamite launched it as a direct extension of the same Hanna-Barbera revival momentum generated by its acclaimed Space Ghost series, signaling an intentional effort to build a shared universe out of Toth's interconnected Saturday-morning creations. The issue also carries storytelling weight as a foundational chapter in what would eventually become a formal comics-universe crossover between Space Ghost and the Herculoids — two franchises born from the same creative hand that had never been united in a dedicated comic-book event before. For readers, it functions as both a nostalgia touchstone and a genuine new-reader entry point into one of animation history's most distinctive science-fantasy concepts.

History

The Herculoids property was created and designed by Alex Toth — the same artist who had given Hanna-Barbera Space Ghost and Birdman — and debuted on CBS on September 9, 1967, directly off the success of those earlier shows; CBS head Fred Silverman had commissioned it as one of three follow-on action series after Space Ghost's strong ratings performance. The 2025 Dynamite revival was written by Tom Sniegoski, a prolific contributor to titles such as Vampirella and Hellboy, and drawn by Craig Rousseau, known for his work on Batman Beyond and Gotham Adventures — a creative team with deep genre roots in both superhero action and cartoon-adjacent adventure storytelling. Dynamite solicited the series in the December 2024 Previews catalog and positioned it explicitly as the next chapter of its Hanna-Barbera publishing initiative, which had begun with the Space Ghost ongoing by David Pepose.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • First issue of the first dedicated Herculoids ongoing comic series, published by Dynamite Entertainment with an on-sale date of February 19, 2025.
  • Written by Tom Sniegoski (Vampirella, Hellboy) with interior art by Craig Rousseau (Batman Beyond, Gotham Adventures).
  • The original Herculoids animated series was created and designed by Alex Toth for Hanna-Barbera; it debuted September 9, 1967, on CBS — the same creator responsible for Space Ghost and Birdman.
  • The series features the full core cast from the cartoon: warrior-king Zandor, his wife Tara, son Dorno, laser-dragon Zok, rock-ape Igoo, rhino-like Tundro, and shape-shifting duo Gloop and Gleep, all defending the resource-rich planet Amzot.
  • Cover artists for issue #1 include Francesco Mattina (Cover A), Joseph Michael Linsner (Cover B), Bjorn Barends (Cover C), Felipe Massafera (Cover D), and Hellboy creator Mike Mignola (Cover E), among additional foil and retailer incentive variants.
  • Dynamite explicitly framed the series as building on the foundation of its Space Ghost title — the two properties share a creator in Alex Toth and a history of crossing over, beginning with the 1967 Space Ghost TV episode 'The Molten Monsters of Moltar.'
  • The Herculoids' prior comics history includes appearances in Gold Key's Hanna-Barbera Super TV Heroes (1968–69), Marvel's TV Stars #3 (1978), and DC's Cartoon Network Presents in the late 1990s — making this the first standalone Herculoids comic series.
  • The 2025 Dynamite ongoing series ultimately feeds into the 2026 crossover miniseries Space Ghost vs. The Herculoids (written by David Pepose, art by Jonathan Lau), described by Dynamite as the first-ever dedicated comics crossover between the two Hanna-Barbera properties.
