The Funnies #40

This February 1940 issue of Dell's The Funnies puts John Carter front and center — bare-chested and fierce, sword raised against the writhing tentacles of some alien plant creature, with the domed spires of a Martian city glowing in the background. The cover, rendered by John Coleman Burroughs, crackles with pulp adventure energy that does full justice to Edgar Rice Burroughs's beloved hero. Rounding out this packed anthology are Rex King of the Deep, Alley Oop, Capt. East, Mr. District Attorney, Bosko, Speed Martin, Crime Busters, and Lightning Jim — ten cents well spent.
