The Dumbest Idea Ever! #[nn]

Mar 2014 · Scholastic · 24.99 USD; 26.99 CAD

In this heartfelt 2014 comic, Jimmy Gownley crafts a relatable coming-of-age story set in the quiet town of Girardville, Pennsylvania, where a frustrated teen finds unexpected inspiration in his own life. When a friend dismisses his comic as unoriginal, Jimmy takes the "dumbest idea ever"—writing about his real experiences—and discovers a surprising connection with his community. With Gownley handling every aspect of the art, lettering, and inking, the story captures the messy, honest journey of growing up, creating, and learning to value where you come from while still dreaming of what’s next.

Jimmy has a good friends and a loving, supportive family, but he's increasingly frustrated by small-town life in Girardville, Pennsylvania, and worried about his transition into high school. He makes a comic book, but his friend Tony says that it isn't very good, and suggests that Jimmy write about their own lives -- the dumbest idea ever, but the community loves the new book. In high school Jimmy wins and loses a girl friend, and is increasingly dissatisfied with his own work. He recognizes the value of his small town, but begins to work on the artistic development that will take him away.
