“The Beginning of the End!”

The cover of The Doom Patrol #121 sets an unmistakably somber mood: beneath a pale full moon and bare, twisted trees, three grieving figures — Negative Man, Elasti-Girl, and Robotman — stand hunched over their own R.I.P. gravestones in a misty graveyard. Joe Orlando's cover art wrings genuine dread out of that bold yellow banner asking "Is This the Beginning of the End of the Doom Patrol?" — with a defiant "You Decide!" blazed across the bottom. Writer Arnold Drake and artist Bruno Premiani were clearly pushing DC's beloved team of outsiders to their limits in 1968, and this haunting image makes it hard not to flip straight to the story inside.

Madame Rouge plans to eliminate both the Brotherhood of Evil and the Doom Patrol. She bombs the Brotherhood's headquarters, killing the Brain and Mallah, then she attacks the Doom Patrol. They survive, but the attacks are endangering others in the city, so they move to a new base on a Caribbean island. Rouge and her ally Captain Zahl, an old enemy of the Chief's, trap them with weapons that rob them of their powers. They are given a choice: either allow themselves to be blown up, or the villains will blow up a small town in Maine. The heroes heroically choose to sacrifice themselves.
