Writer Ed Brisson publicly stated that he had been trying to get the concept off the ground for more than fifteen years before BOOM! Studios editor Elizabeth Brei shepherded it to publication; Brisson also described the story as drawing directly on his own childhood in Oshawa, Ontario — the real Canadian city fictionally erased at the heart of the plot. Artist Luca Casalanguida, an Italian illustrator with a deep résumé in European genre comics (Sergio Bonelli Editore, James Bond for Dynamite, Scout's Honor for AfterShock), brought a grounded, character-focused visual style to the book that reviewers consistently praised across all five issues.
