- Published October 12, 1983 by Fantagraphics Books; 114 pages; edited by Gary Groth.
- The 'Newswatch' section (p. 13–14) contains a news report headlined about Marvel's upcoming 'Secret Wars' event and includes an early illustration of Spider-Man's black costume — documented by collectors as appearing before the costume's debut in Amazing Spider-Man #252 (early 1984).
- Cover art was drawn by Joe Kubert, described as a homage to Dynamic Comics #11.
- The issue's centerpiece is the first installment of Robin Snyder's in-depth interview with Robert Kanigher, titled 'The Golden Age Gladiator' (p. 51); the interview was so extensive it continued into TCJ #86.
- Kanigher was one of DC Comics' most prolific writer-editors, credited with co-creating Black Canary, the Metal Men, Sgt. Rock, and scripting Wonder Woman for over two decades.
- Additional editorial content includes an essay by Jan Strnad ('Bitter Harvest,' p. 87), a column by Harlan Ellison ('An Edge in My Voice,' p. 108), a column by Kevin McConnell on John Byrne ('Byrned Out,' p. 6), and a cinema column by Dale Luciano.
- The Comics Journal was, by this point in its history, the primary outlet for long-form critical and historical interviews with comics professionals, operating in sharp contrast to the promotional tone of other fan publications of the era.
