The Batman Adventures #12

History

The Batman Adventures launched in 1992 as a direct tie-in to Batman: The Animated Series, designed to mirror the show's animated aesthetic and continuity rather than the main DC Universe line; most of its run was written by Kelley Puckett with interior art by penciler Mike Parobeck and inker Rick Burchett, the same team responsible for issue #12. The issue, titled 'Batgirl: Day One,' was edited by Scott Peterson with Darren Vincenzo as assistant editor, and it was published on or around August 3–5, 1993 (cover-dated September 1993), placing Batgirl's comic appearance in the tie-in line about two months ahead of her formal animated debut in the two-part episode 'Shadow of the Bat,' which aired September 13–14, 1993 — a deliberate, if slightly ahead-of-schedule, coordination between the comics team and the television production. Harley Quinn herself had been created for animation by writer Paul Dini and character designer Bruce Timm, inspired by actress Arleen Sorkin's jester performance in a Days of Our Lives dream sequence; she was never intended to recur past her one-off episode debut, but audience enthusiasm made her a fixture — and it fell to the Puckett/Parobeck Adventures team to give her a printed home.
