This DC Black Label series continues with a cover that evokes the smoky atmosphere of golden-age noir — a well-dressed man in a wide-brimmed hat and yellow-tinted glasses stands alongside a poised, watchful woman, while the looming silhouette of the Bat-Man dominates the background and a grotesque, scarecrow-like figure lurks menacingly to the left. Mike Perkins's painterly cover art layers these figures with real compositional tension, the muted cream palette punctuated by deep purples and sickly greens that lend the whole image an unsettling elegance. Dan Jurgens and Perkins are clearly building something atmospheric and distinctly of its era with this second chapter.
