In the main story shown, the Barker attempts to capitalize on a carnival exhibit featuring a gorilla named Gootcho by orchestrating a robbery at the Last National Bank, then using the chaos to convince authorities to let him and an accomplice named Barney out of custody for a week. When his elaborate plan to transport the gorilla to collect the stolen money goes awry, the savage beast escapes and causes pandemonium at the carnival, forcing the Barker to contend with his own creation's havoc. The story culminates with Gootcho's rampage turning the situation into a comedic disaster despite the Barker's attempts to control events.
The Barker tackles a swindler named Pistachio who's been fired from the circus for his troublemaking ways. When a publicity stunt goes sideways—turning Pistachio into a fake cave man to stir up interest in the next town—the schemer decides to use the chaos for his own gain, robbing locals while disguised. As the real cave man act arrives to capitalize on the hysteria, Pistachio's con threatens to unravel in ways he never anticipated.
Colonel Lane's circus faces a crisis when their star attraction, the world-famous gorilla Gootcho, dies—and he must find a replacement before the afternoon show. When Colonel stumbles upon "Barney" at Slick's Hot Licks Cafe, the desperate promoter is willing to take the gorilla on Slick's terms, unaware that the shrewd cafe owner has his own scheme in mind. As Gootcho takes the big top by storm, the Colonel discovers that things may not be quite what they seem, and Slick's past catches up with him in ways neither man expected.
