The Avengers #17
Avengers #17 is the first full mission for 'Cap's Kooky Quartet' — the dramatically downsized new roster of Captain America, Hawkeye, Quicksilver, and Scarlet Witch that debuted in the previous issue — making it the earliest showcase of the interpersonal friction and underdog chemistry that would define the Avengers for years and permanently prove the team could survive without its founding powerhouses. The issue also introduces the Minotaur, a creature belonging to the Mole Man, and serves as an early example of Marvel's cross-title storytelling experiment: its events run concurrently with the Hulk's battle against the Leader in Tales to Astonish #69, with some panels reproduced directly between the two books. Stan Lee wrote this issue directly after the roster upheaval engineered in Avengers #16; the difficulty of coordinating continuity across the Avengers' individual solo titles was a known editorial pressure that had prompted Lee to write the original cast out of the book entirely. Don Heck penciled the interior story — with Jack Kirby contributing face retouches, per production records at the Grand Comics Database — while Dick Ayers inked and Sam Rosen lettered; Kirby and Frank Giacoia provided the cover. The release date logged by the Library of Congress Copyright Office is April 8, 1965, with a June 1965 cover date.
