“The Mighty Avengers Meet Spider-Man!”

In "The Mighty Avengers Meet Spider-Man!", the Avengers face a chilling mystery when a robotic version of Spider-Man appears, sent back in time by the time-traveling villain Kang. With Iron Man's whereabouts unknown and the hero's armor acting strangely, the team must confront an enemy who wears their friend's face — all while Stan Lee's sharp storytelling and Don Heck's dynamic art bring the clash to life, enhanced by Chic Stone's inks and Stan Goldberg's vibrant colors. The cover, a striking collaboration by Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, captures the tension in bold, iconic lines.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • First meeting of Spider-Man (Peter Parker) and the Avengers as a team — confirmed across multiple sources as the first time they appeared together in a single story, with prior individual encounters noted but not a full-team crossover.
  • Kang the Conqueror returns as the main villain, his first Avengers appearance since issue #8; he does not appear in person but schemes from the future, dispatching the Spider-Man robot to infiltrate and destroy the team.
  • First appearance of the Spider-Man Robot (later known as Timespinner), a Kang-built android that possesses all of Spider-Man's abilities and is the primary antagonist of the story.
  • The Spider-Man Robot later returned in Spider-Man Team-Up #4 (September 1996), now operating under the name Timespinner with additional time-based powers.
  • Iron Man appears prominently on the cover but is entirely absent from the interior story, referenced only via a continuity thread from Tales of Suspense #61 in which Tony Stark's 'death' was reported.
  • The cover's credits are disputed: Jack Kirby penciled the bulk of it, but researcher Nick Caputo argues Steve Ditko drew or revised the Spider-Man figure — and possibly the Giant-Man figure — with Chic Stone on inks; some earlier sources credited Kirby and Dick Ayers.
  • Cameo appearances (in Kang's data files) include Baron Zemo, the Executioner, Wonder Man, Kraven the Hunter, Radioactive Man, the Unicorn, Mysterio, Magneto, and Doctor Doom.
  • The issue has been reprinted numerous times, including in Avengers Annual #5 (January 1972), Essential Avengers Vol. 1, Marvel Masterworks: The Avengers Vol. 2, and the 2019 trade Decades: Marvel in the '60s — Spider-Man Meets the Marvel Universe.
