Avengers #103 is the middle chapter of Roy Thomas's farewell arc on a title he had shepherded for nearly six years, and it pulls double duty as both a Sentinel saga and a pivotal chapter in the Vision's emotional journey. History

Roy Thomas scripted issues #103 as the penultimate installment of a three-part Sentinels story spanning Avengers #102–104, which multiple contemporary commentators have described as his swan song on the series he had written since 1966. Rich Buckler handled pencils throughout the arc, with veteran inker Joe Sinnott finishing the line art and Sam Rosen lettering; this same Buckler/Sinnott team had been in place for the preceding issues. Notably, this issue also marks the formal editorial handoff — GCD records confirm that Roy Thomas took over from Stan Lee as editor with this issue, wearing both the writer and editor hats simultaneously before handing the writing reins to Steve Englehart with issue #105.

This issue is the second chapter of a three-part Sentinels arc (Avengers #102–104) that Thomas conceived as a direct sequel to his celebrated Sentinels story from X-Men #57–60 (1969), which he had written with artist Neal Adams.
Dr. Peter Corbeau, head of the Starcore solar-monitoring project, appears in this issue; sources conflict on whether this or Incredible Hulk #148 (February 1972) constitutes his first appearance (see flagged).
The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants — Blob (Fred Dukes), Toad (Mortimer Toynbee), Mastermind (Jason Wyngarde), and Vanisher (Telford Porter) — appear in flashback sequences, recapping their prior Sentinel captivity from the X-Men storyline.
A key character beat has the Vision privately wrestling with the Grim Reaper's offer from #102 to transfer his consciousness into the preserved body of Wonder Man — a dangling thread that would not be fully resolved until much later in the series.
