A massive gorilla dominates this 1988 Dark Horse cover, lunging forward through what appears to be a grand public hall while the star-spangled hero known as the American — butterfly net in hand — charges right behind it, with panicked bystanders scattering in the background. It's a wonderfully absurd and kinetic image, rendered with confident linework by cover artist Chris Warner, that perfectly captures the offbeat energy of this title. Winner of the 1987 Golden Apple Award for "Best New Character," The American was clearly making its mark, and "Bearing Witness" looks to keep that momentum going strong.
