“A Method in His Madness!”

In "A Method in His Madness!", Spider-Man finds himself caught in a bizarre twist when hypnotist Mesmero offers him a lucrative gig performing in his Broadway show—only to turn the stage into a deadly trap. When a harsh critic becomes Mesmero’s next victim, Spidey must stop the mind-controlled man from jumping off the Brooklyn Bridge, setting off a chain of events that turns the spotlight into a battleground. Written by Denny O'Neil and illustrated by Jim Mooney, with inks by Pablo Marcos and letters by Jim Novak, this gripping two-part story sees Spidey face a villain who blurs the line between performance and peril—cover by Al Milgrom.

Mesmero offers Spider-Man four hundred dollars a week if he will agree to make special appearances in his Broadway show. Unfortunately, the drama critic for the Globe hates Mesmero's performance and pans him in the newspaper. Mesmero hypnotizes the unkind reviewer and compels him to wrap himself in chains and jump off the Brooklyn Bridge. Spidey intervenes, which Mesmero sees as tantamount to betrayal. When Spidey shows up for his curtain call, Mesmero tries to kill him in front of a captive audience.
