The All New Atom #17

The tagline says it all — "Small Wonder!" — as a tiny, acrobatic Atom swoops in wielding what appears to be an energy-charged rod directly toward a startled Wonder Woman, whose golden tiara and wide eyes fill the foreground of this striking January 2008 cover by José Ladrönn. The scale contrast is wonderfully dynamic, with the miniaturized hero's crackling attack radiating bolts of light across Wonder Woman's face, while dark tentacle-like shapes creep in from the left to suggest something larger is afoot. With Gail Simone scripting and Mike Norton and Trevor Scott handling interior art, "The Atom & the Amazon" promises an entertainingly offbeat team-up that only this series could deliver.
