Someone has been raiding the chipmunk family's store of nuts. Peter and Beetle investigate and find a hawk fighting a fox over a baby chipmunk. The hawk takes the chipmunk to his nest, but Peter, with help from Beetle and a blue jay (and also the fox, which has a change of heart), come to the rescue. The nut thieves turn out to be two crows.
