Texas Ranger Jeff Clements arrives in the town of Ponca to apprehend Ferris Oliver, a wanted murderer with eleven warrants for first-degree murder, only to find himself branded a killer when he's forced to draw on Oliver in self-defense. Facing a lynch mob bent on hanging him, Clements is mysteriously saved by a masked rifleman—but as he rides out of town, the ranger begins to suspect that nothing about this case is quite what it seems.

When outlaws under Hack Wilson's control turn the border town of Gunsight into a lawless stronghold, the desperate citizens send for help from the Texas Rangers—only to receive a single ranger, Bret Loomis, instead of the company they'd hoped for. Facing impossible odds and no support from the frightened townspeople, Loomis must find another way to reclaim the town, even if it means standing almost entirely alone against the gunhawks and gamblers who've made Gunsight their base of operations.

After twenty years behind bars, the outlaw leader known as "the Ghost"—Al Catlett—finally escapes prison and reunites with his old segundo, Black Bill Morley, determined to make good on his vow to destroy the town of Taos that sent him away. The Texas Rangers, tipped off by the townspeople, race to intercept Catlett and his reassembled gang before they can strike, setting up a dangerous game of pursuit across the desert frontier. With most of the outlaws hardened by decades of violence and imprisonment, the Rangers know stopping them won't be easy.
