Sam Tevis, having survived the war between the states and recovered his stolen ranch, joins the Texas Rangers in a strange homecoming. Winchester rifles intended as payment to Indians are stolen by a turncoat, and Sam must track down the thief while dealing with fellow rangers who resent his presence and plot against him. The story continues with Sam pursuing the criminal Luke Barnes across Texas, facing betrayal from within the ranger ranks as hard men who detested him before now seek to use him or eliminate him entirely.

Contains 4 stories
Homecoming
7 pp · Western-Frontier

After fighting in the Civil War, Sam Tevis returns home to find his father dead and his ranch stolen by "Captain" Luke Barnes, a guerrilla masquerading as a Union militia man. Rather than seek revenge alone, Sam joins the Texas Rangers to pursue Barnes through legal means—a decision that tests his resolve when danger closes in. With a warrant in hand, Sam rides back to his home place for a final reckoning with the man who took everything from him.

The Turncoat
6 pp · Western-Frontier

Ranger Sam Tevis faces bitter suspicion from his own community when he's assigned to enforce the law during Reconstruction—a job that pits him against resentful Southern veterans who see him as a traitor to Texas. As Tevis pursues outlaws and renegades while refusing to abandon his badge, he must prove that upholding justice, not betraying his people, is the true path to reclaiming the state's future.

4 O'Clock Deadline
2 pp · Western-Frontier

A young gunslinger named Samson shoots down Andy Clark at the Bithorn Saloon, then faces off against Marshal Beckett, who gives him until 4 o'clock to leave town—a deadline that forces Samson to confront what real courage actually means. Published in 1959, "4 O'Clock Deadline" explores the gap between speed and nerve in a tense Western showdown.

The Showdown
7 pp · Western-Frontier

When ex-Confederate soldiers refuse to help Texas Ranger Sam Tevis stop a jailbreak, he shames them into joining his pursuit of Luke Barnes and the owlhooters who freed the accused murderer. As the hunt leads to a rocky mesa where Barnes has made his stand, Tevis must bridge the old wounds between himself and the men who once called him a turncoat—or face down an outlaw gang alone. It's a tale of pride, redemption, and the hard choice between grudges and standing together for Texas.
