Bat Bentley digs up a psychiatry textbook and hatches a scheme to drive his prankster buddy Spike crazy by feeding him manufactured symptoms of mental illness—starting with accusations from other soldiers and escalating through a pair of fake sweepstakes letters. As Spike spirals from paranoid rage to delusions of wealth to crushing despair, Bat watches his plan succeed almost too well, and the practical joke begins to blur the line between fiction and reality in ways he never anticipated.
