About this Collection

This 1972 Watson-Guptill Publications volume collects the original newspaper comic strip adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs' first Tarzan novel, chronicling the origin of John Clayton, Lord Greystoke—the feral child raised by apes in the African jungle who becomes the legendary Tarzan. The edition presents the complete narrative of Tarzan's early life, his discovery of his human heritage, and his encounters with civilization, featuring the foundational characters of the Tarzan mythos.

"A Long Chance" presents a gripping chapter in the legendary tale of Tarzan, born of tragedy and raised among apes. Written by Edgar Rice Burroughs and Robert M. Hodes, and brought to life with bold, dynamic art by Burne Hogarth—both in pencils and inks—this 1972 issue captures Tarzan’s early struggles and growing awareness. From the moment he’s adopted by the ape Kala, his sharp mind and quiet determination set him apart, as he uncovers the remnants of his human past and faces his first true test of survival. The cover, also by Hogarth, perfectly frames the intensity of this pivotal moment.

When the infant Tarzan's parents die after being marooned in Africa, childless Kala adopts the baby and raises him as a Great Ape. Over time his superior intelligence begins to give him an edge over his fellows. He repeatedly explores his parents' cabin, teaches himself the rudiments of reading, and finds a hunting knife which he uses, although gravely wounded, to slay the attacking Bolgani.
