“Severance Package”

Part of Marvel's street-level Tangled Web anthology, this 2001 issue wraps up "Severance Package" with a cover by Eduardo Risso that does a lot of atmospheric heavy lifting. A suited man armed with a pistol lies tangled in a giant spider-web, scattered hundred-dollar bills around him, while the massive, looming figure of the Kingpin bears down from above — ringed by that same web, making it clear who really controls the strands. Greg Rucka and Risso make a sharp creative pairing for crime-inflected Spider-Man stories, and this closing chapter promises the kind of tense, noir-flavored finish the image so vividly telegraphs.
