About this Collection

This collection brings together the 1990 Eclipse series Tales of the Mysterious Traveler, which adapted stories from the classic old-time radio show of the same name. The comic featured a framing narrative of a mysterious traveler recounting eerie and supernatural tales, with each issue presenting a self-contained horror or suspense story. The volume collects the complete run of the series, showcasing work by various writers and artists who brought the radio drama's chilling atmosphere to the comics page.

In "What Wilbur Saw...", a hauntingly quiet tale from 1990, a blind girl named Susi finds solace in her imaginary friend Grulla in the isolated Bavarian Alps. When Grulla finally takes shape and promises a surprise, the arrival of a new adoptive family—strangely named Grulla—brings a chilling twist neither Susi nor the reader could foresee. Steve Ditko’s distinctive art, both in story and on the cover, lends a dreamlike, eerie precision to this unsettling mystery.

Little Susi, blind from birth, and no one willing to adopt her, lived in an orphanage in the Bavarian Alps. But she had an imaginary playmate, Grulla, who kept her company. Then one night, Grulla took form, told her he was going away, but would return with a surprise. Soon a couple came to the orphanage to adopt and chose Susi: the couple was named the Grullas, and the husband was an eye surgeon!
