In 18th-century France, ravaged by plague and revolution, a crematorium worker named Aaron Parigee makes a desperate vow to his dying wife, Madalyne, promising their daughter Cassandra anything she desires. Years later, as Cassandra grows into a young woman, her heart turns to Andre Brigance, a man entangled in scandal as a royal paramour. When Aaron learns of her love, he is consumed by fury and betrayal—so much so that he has Andre executed and preserves his corpse, offering it to Cassandra as a twisted fulfillment of his vow.
In a quiet German village, Max Schuller takes in a strange, bulbous-headed creature he finds devouring his chickens, treating it like a son and sharing his loneliness. When the Baron learns of the creature’s existence, he claims it for his own, subjecting it to cruel torment. That night, the creature strikes back—killing the Baron and vanishing into the shadows. As the Baron’s men hunt it down, the creature returns to Max’s home, not with vengeance, but with a dark, unexpected act of gratitude.
