Sweet Tooth #14
Jeff Lemire's unsettling vision gets a brilliantly strange cover treatment here: a set of Russian nesting dolls, each one containing a different hybrid child — a pig-nosed figure, a smaller alien-eared one, and a tiny animal-faced creature — while the largest doll has been cracked open to reveal a wide-eyed adult man in a flannel shirt, staring out with an almost haunted expression. The nesting-doll metaphor feels perfectly chosen for a series about children who don't fit the world they've inherited. This December 2010 Vertigo issue, part two of the "Animal Armies" arc, showcases why Sweet Tooth earned its devoted readership.
