Swamp Thing #2
A walk through the swamp turns terrifying in this 2016 DC series, with Kelley Jones delivering a cover that crackles with raw, primal energy — a massive, snarling Swamp Thing launches himself through a darkened forest while a gaunt, skull-faced figure scrambles desperately away amid a writhing tangle of roots and decay. Jones's artwork has always had a wonderfully grotesque intensity, and here, paired with Michelle Madsen's sickly greens and deep shadows, the mood is genuinely unsettling in the best way. Len Wein — the character's original co-creator — returning to write Swamp Thing makes this a series with something real at stake from the very start.
