Written by Otto Binder and illustrated by Al Plastino, the story follows Superman as he helps her settle into life on Earth at the Midvale Orphanage. In a story that introduces one of DC’s most beloved heroes, Superman discovers a young girl from Krypton after spotting a crashing rocket. She reveals her name is Supergirl—Kara Zor-El—and shares how her father, Zor-El, sent her to Earth to escape the deadly Kryptonite poisoning that threatened Argo City. When Jimmy Olsen volunteers to test Professor Potter’s evolution accelerator, he transforms into the Cosmic Brain—a being from a million years in the future. As the Cosmic Brain, he compels Superman to carve a massive crater in the Antarctic ice and fill it with heavy materials, all while maintaining a mysterious urgency. Only after Jimmy returns to normal does Superman realize the shocking truth behind the plan: the Cosmic Brain had foreseen a catastrophic shift in Earth’s landmasses that could doom the planet.
