Superman #8
Part of DC's New 52 initiative, Superman #8 (June 2012) promises a deeply unsettling encounter with the cover tagline "Helspont's Pawn of Steel." Ivan Reis and Joe Prado's cover art depicts Superman in a harrowing close-up, his face partially overtaken by glowing, tendril-like energy while a monstrous, grinning alien presence looms large behind him — the implication of mental or physical domination is hard to shake. Writers Dan Jurgens and Keith Giffen, with art by Jurgens and inks by Jesús Merino, bring a genuinely eerie tension to this chapter of the Man of Steel's New 52 adventures.
