“Flying Blind”

Part of DC's New 52 relaunch, Superman #2 (2011) arrives with a cover that pulses with kinetic energy — George Pérez depicts the Man of Steel being slammed through a crumbling building wall, tangled in writhing green tendrils while Metropolis stretches out behind him. The tagline "Unseen! Unknown! Unbeatable!" hints at a threat that has Superman very much on the back foot, which makes for a compelling image from a hero rarely shown this outmatched. With Pérez handling both writing and cover art alongside interior work by Jesús Merino, this issue promises a freshly reimagined Superman tested in ways that feel genuinely new.

While trying to figure out why the fire creature he recently fought seemed to say Krypton, Superman is suddenly confronted by a new menace, invisible only to him. Using the cameras at an electronics store as his eyes, Superman is able to defeat the monster, but not before it also whispers the name of Superman's home planet.
