Something has gone terribly wrong for the Man of Steel in this 1956 DC issue, whose cover — penciled and inked by Al Plastino — shows a submissive Superman gripping a tree trunk and responding "Yes, master, I obey!" to an armored, Roman-style commander on horseback who orders him to uproot it. The teaser "Superman, Slave!" splashed across the cover raises the stakes immediately, hinting that the world's greatest adventure character has somehow fallen under another's control.
