Superior Spider-Man #3
Superior Spider-Man (Vol. 3) #3, titled "Plot Armor," is a key chapter in Dan Slott's decade-spanning Otto Octavius saga, functioning as the central confrontation issue of the series' first arc as Peter Parker dons Otto's old costume to impersonate the Superior Spider-Man while genuinely grappling with Supernova — a villain whose very existence is a direct consequence of Otto's intellectual cruelty. The issue dramatizes the moral chasm between the two Spider-Men through action rather than exposition, with Peter deliberately freeing the Spiderlings rather than weaponizing them as Otto would demand. It also marks an early in-series appearance of Spiders-Man (Earth-11580), the hive-mind spider collective from the Spider-Geddon era, deepening the multiverse texture of the arc. The issue was later collected in the trade paperback Superior Spider-Man Vol. 1: Supernova, cementing its place as essential reading within the Vol. 3 storyline.

The third volume of Superior Spider-Man was conceived to celebrate the ten-year anniversary of the original 2013 body-swap storyline, with Marvel announcing in June 2023 that Dan Slott — the architect of the entire Otto Octavius-as-Spider-Man concept — would return to write the new series. A preparatory one-shot, Superior Spider-Man Returns, launched in October 2023 with artwork by the original series' art team before the ongoing began in November 2023 with Slott and longtime collaborator Mark Bagley on pencils; issue #3 followed on January 24, 2024. The editorial team was led by editor Ellie Pyle under editor-in-chief C.B. Cebulski, with John Dell on inks, Edgar Delgado on colors, and VC's Joe Caramagna on letters — a tight production unit that remained consistent across all eight issues of the run.
Trivia · 8 facts
- Released January 24, 2024; cover-dated March 2024; carries legacy issue #48 numbering in the broader Spider-Man line.
- Story title is "Plot Armor"; written by Dan Slott with art by Mark Bagley (pencils), John Dell (inks), and Edgar Delgado (colors).
- Peter Parker impersonates the Superior Spider-Man in this issue, donning Otto's old costume to infiltrate one of his bases and trick the Spiderlings — a notable role-reversal of the original Vol. 1 premise.
- Supernova (Estrella Lopez) appears as the primary antagonist; her origin is recounted in flashback — she was a lab assistant wronged by Otto, who stole credit for her miniature-star breakthrough, leading her to absorb its energy and transform into a living stellar entity.
- Spiders-Man (Earth-11580) — the hive-mind swarm of spiders carrying Peter Parker's memories, first introduced in Spider-Geddon #3 (2018/2019) — makes a cameo appearance, foreshadowing a larger role in the arc's second half.
- Anna Maria Marconi and Otto Octavius (Doctor Octopus) both appear; Peter and Otto are forced into an uneasy alliance against Supernova, with the two Spider-Men in fundamental ethical disagreement about how to handle both her and the Spiderlings.
- The issue is collected in the trade paperback Superior Spider-Man Vol. 1: Supernova, which gathers Superior Spider-Man Returns #1, Superior Spider-Man (2023) #1–5, and material from Amazing Spider-Man (2022) #31.
- The series of which this issue is part was planned as an eight-issue run, concluding with issue #8 in June 2024, after which a fourth volume was later announced.
