Superior Spider-Man #2
Superior Spider-Man (Vol. 3) #2 — titled 'Suit Up!' — is the issue where Dan Slott formally closes the trap of Otto Octavius's unresolved past by forcing Peter Parker and Doc Ock into an uneasy alliance, a narrative device that defines the entire third volume. The issue escalates Supernova (Estrella Lopez) from a newly unleashed threat into the arc's emotional engine, because her grievance is not with Peter but with Otto — dramatizing the theme that the sins of the Superior Spider-Man era carry direct, human consequences. It also marks a key chapter in Spider-Boy's growing role in the main Marvel continuity, offering a retroactive explanation for where Bailey Briggs was during Doc Ock's original body-swap tenure. Taken together, this issue is the pivot point of the 'Supernova' arc and the moment the third volume establishes its central dramatic question: can Otto Octavius reckon with the people he harmed before he can claim any kind of heroism?

The third volume of Superior Spider-Man was announced in June 2023 to coincide with the tenth anniversary of the original 2013 body-swap storyline, with Dan Slott returning as writer alongside artist Mark Bagley — the same pairing from the Spider-Man (2022–23) series that immediately preceded it. A one-shot, Superior Spider-Man Returns, launched in October 2023 with art contributions from original-run artists Ryan Stegman, Humberto Ramos, and Giuseppe Camuncoli, and led directly into the ongoing title, which debuted in November 2023. Issue #2, released December 20, 2023 (cover-dated February 2024), is inked by John Dell with colors by Edgar Delgado and letters by Joe Caramagna, and was edited under editor-in-chief C.B. Cebulski.
Trivia · 8 facts
- Issue title is 'Suit Up!' (Superior Spider-Man Vol. 3, #2); released December 20, 2023, cover-dated February 2024.
- Written by Dan Slott; pencils by Mark Bagley; inks by John Dell; colors by Edgar Delgado; letters by Joe Caramagna.
- Supernova (Estrella Lopez) makes her second overall appearance here — her first appearance was in Superior Spider-Man Returns #1 (October 2023), created by Dan Slott and Humberto Ramos.
- Supernova's in-story origin: a former lab assistant of Otto's who cracked the equation to create a miniature star, only to have Otto steal credit; she performed the experiment alone, absorbed the star's energy, and transformed into a living nuclear being seeking revenge.
- Spider-Boy (Bailey Briggs) is a featured supporting character; Supernova attacks him hoping he can lead her to Spider-Man, then shows reluctance to harm a child — an early piece of her characterization as a sympathetic antagonist.
- The issue ends with Peter Parker and Otto Octavius agreeing to team up to rescue Anna Maria Marconi, whom Supernova has kidnapped as leverage.
- Aunt May, Uncle Ben, The Burglar, and Earth-42155 variants of Peter Parker appear only in recap panels, providing the Spider-Boy backstory context.
- Collected in Superior Spider-Man Vol. 1: Supernova trade paperback (ISBN 9781302955939), which gathers Superior Spider-Man Returns #1 and Superior Spider-Man (2023) #1–5.
