History

The series grew out of Dan Slott's long-running Amazing Spider-Man tenure and his 'Dying Wish' arc, which concluded in Amazing Spider-Man #700 (December 2012) with Otto Octavius completing a mind-swap that left Peter Parker dead in a failing body. Marvel teased the new title as early as September 2012 with a cryptic 'Superior' image lacking any creative team, then formally announced the book — written by Slott and drawn by Ryan Stegman, Humberto Ramos, and Giuseppe Camuncoli — just before New York Comic Con 2012. Launched as part of the Marvel NOW! initiative, the series went on sale January 9, 2013, with a cover date of March 2013, and its first issue carries a cover design consciously inspired by Todd McFarlane's famous Spider-Man #1 (1990), a visual lineage Stegman acknowledged publicly.
