Supergirl #31
Few covers from 1999 capture a hero's inner turmoil quite this viscerally — the cover by Leonard Kirk and Robin Riggs presents Supergirl's face literally split down the middle, one half her familiar human visage and the other a writhing, grotesque mass of purple and pink organic matter, her mouth open in a scream that bridges both halves. It's a striking visual statement about identity fracturing from within, perfectly paired with the story title "A House Divided." Peter David and artist Leonard Kirk bring real creative ambition to this run, and this issue looks like one of its more unsettling stops.
