Submarine Attack #37

From Charlton's long-running naval war series comes this January 1963 issue, featuring a tense "Coastal Raid!" as promised right on the cover — where a submariner mans a deck-mounted gun atop the conning tower while two civilians, including a child in a red jacket, cling to the railing below as an enemy aircraft bears down from above. The cover by Dick Giordano captures the split-second drama of the scene beautifully, and the tagline — "one of the strangest assignments of the war" — sets up writer Joe Gill's interior tale, "Slow Death," with just the right amount of intrigue.
